Naa Boosts Ghana’s Chances at Miss World

Ghana’s chances at this year’s Miss World event were given a major boost last Monday when Miss Ghana 2012, Naa Okailey Shooter who is representing the country at this year’s edition made it to the list of finalists in the Beach Fashion category. This year’s event, the 63rd edition is being hosted by Indonesia. The grand finals will be held at the country’s Sentui International Convention Centre

Naa was the only African contestant on the list of 11 countries to have reached the final stage of the Beach Fashion category, one of the six Fast Track events in the pageant. A contestant’s qualification to the finals of a Miss World Fast Track event, and winning as well, enhances her chances in the competition particularly during the finals.

The other countries who made the finals of the beach category are host country, Indonesia, France, Philippines, Italy, China, Jamaica, Moldova, Spain, Ukraine and Brazil. As part of the competition, the contestants took part in a poolside demonstration of how to tie a sarong and were judged accordingly. Naa Okailey’s progression is seen as an exciting development which would better her chances of taking a successful shot at the ultimate.

Naa Okailey scaled through the first round when 33 countries out of the 131 were selected and then made it to the final list of 11 countries. All 11 finalists took part in a special photo shoot last Tuesday September 10. The winner will be announced at the grand finale on September 28.

The other Fast Track events include Sports and Fitness, Talent Competition, Top Model, Beauty with a Purpose and World Fashion Design.
The Miss World pageant is undoubtedly the most successful and highly recognised beauty pageant on the global scene. It is also the oldest surviving major international beauty pageant. It was created in the United Kingdom by Eric Morley in 1951. Since his death in 2000, Morley’s wife, Julia Morley, co-chairs the pageant.
