Watch Video: Fire Destroys Kantamanto Market in Accra

A massive fire on Sunday morning destroyed sections of the Kantamanto Market in Accra. The reports indicated that efforts by officials of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to put out the fire were being hampered by their inability to gain entrance into the market due to the poor architectural design of the place and the placement of illegal structures on some streets of the market. Lots of goods and merchandise at the market were consumed in the fire.

Thick dark smoke was seen billowing into the sky from the market square where thousands of traders, hawkers and many business offices do their trading.

Traders and shop owners were seen making frantic efforts to salvage their goods and merchandise from the inferno. Others were also desperately helping to fight the fire with any water they could lay hands on, including sachet water packs.

The cause of the blaze is unknown.
