Joshua Clottey Records Win Over Johnson

Former welterweight titlist Joshua Clottey returned to the ring after nearly two years off, scoring a 10-round decision over Dashon Johnson at the Paramount Theatre in Huntington, New York.

Scores were 100-89 (twice) and 99-90. There were no knockdowns in the bout, but Johnson was docked a point for a takedown for tossing Clottey to the canvas.

The night served as Clottey’s debut with Star Boxing since making the move earlier this year to the Bronx-based company, which keeps his business affairs close to home (Clottey was born in Ghana but relocated to the Bronx). Promotional and managerial issues kept the veteran boxer out of the ring for all of 2012 and most of 2013 but now hopes to make a run in the super welterweight division.

Saturday night wasn’t an inspiring start towards that goal, but an uneven performance was expected to some degree after going 22 months between fights. Nevertheless, the lack of action made for a tough night for the fans on hand who would rather be home watching ‘The One’ pay-per-view event, although a live viewing at the venue was included with a ticket purchase.

Clottey advances to 37-4 (22KO) with the win, his second after having endured a two-fight losing streak dating back to June 2009. Johnson falls to 14-13-3 (5KO), having now lost seven of his last eight contests.
